8 unique characters for numeric formats, 7 unique characters for numeric informats or character formats, 6 unique characters for character informats.
The length restrictions are a result of how formats are/were stored on IBM mainframes (as PDS members). I don't think the change in version 8. Libnames and macro names have the same 8 character restriction.

I'm glad that version 7 finally brings to us long variable names, but it
seems that format names are still restricted to 8 (or 7) characters. Is this
restriction lifted for version 8? If not, when?
