Subject: FW: 3390 mod 9 Multivolume SAS Dataset ?Requires ESDS Implies No
EXCP? 213-B8

Regarding the "bad answer," I got a perfectly correct answer which was not
to the question I intended to ask. I attribute that to my poorly formed
question. I was told that data striping (which allows high performance
sequential access) was incompatible with EXCP and direct access. This is
absolutely true. It also has little to do with my problem.
Careful inspection of an IBM documentation CD reveals the tidbit,
"The EXCP macro instruction allows you to control the data organization
based on
device characteristics. The exceptions to this capability are
partitioned data sets extended (PDSEs), extended format data sets,
spooled and dummy data sets, TSO terminals, and HFS (hierarchical file
system) data sets. They are not supported for user-written applications
using EXCP."
IBM requires extended format to access more than 65K tracks on a single
pack. I took brief encouragement from the phrase "user-written
applications," but it looks like SI qualifies as a user for purposes of this
exception.
Well, we can still access 65K tracks per volume on 5 volumes, up from the
previous limit of 49K tracks (an entire 3390 mod 3) per volume on 5 volumes.
It looks like we will have to get to V8 to really blow past this limit.
