I maintain a dataset in version 6 of SAS. SMS-managed disk-format SAS libraries appear limited to 5 volumes. We are close to filling our current disks and are attempting to replace them with (STK SVA emulated) 3390 mod 9's. The dataset will appear to the OS as a single dataset spanning 5 packs.

Our current dataset is allocated: ALLOC USED EX DSORG -DCB ATTRIBUTES- 49935 49935 1 PS FS 27648 27648 49935 49935 1 PS FS 27648 27648 49935 49935 1 PS FS 27648 27648 49935 49935 1 PS FS 27648 27648 49935 49935 1 PS FS 27648 27648 49675 49675

Our systems folks tell us that to allocate a single dataset filling an entire 3390-9, we need to use extended sequential datasets. The explanation is something about exceeding 65K tracks. While this allows us to allocate the full five volume (emulated) 3390-9 dataset we want, writing it in SAS (even reading it) generates an error: 213-B8: "An OPEN was attempted against an extended sequential data set with a DCB which specified EXCP. EXCP is not supported for extended sequential data sets.

I expressed the problem badly to SI and got a bad answer. Before I try again, I would like to hear from anyone who has tried to allocate an entire 3390 mod 9 to a single SAS library. Has anyone succeeded at this?
