Subject:   PUT Function/Verb & PICTURE Clauses In DATA Step

Is it possible to specify at least common PICTURE clauses (e.g., '000000') in the data step without resorting to a separate PICTURE clause defined within PROC FORMAT?

Pardon my ignorance, but I didn't see anything in the manual and it just seems like there there should be a way...
