Hello again SAS-L, I want to thank everyone who has answered to my earlier post. All your ideas were very good and they would work with the information I gave you originally. When I went back to my problem here and tried to apply them though, I ran into a bit of unforeseen problems. I should explain that all these comments are hand-typed by people (usually in a hurry) and that is the reason for the variability. What I'm looking for is all the values associated with "NS". As you will see in some cases there is more than one value, in those cases I will need both values. Also, in some cases they will type 23.5" and in other cases 23 1/2" I will send you now what some of the comments really look like:

data test; input comment $40.; cards;

4/27-3-74" PHDS 20",23"NS & 20"SS-NETS 5/4-78" MK 8" SS & 98" DENT 23" NS ?-290 5-2/78"PHDS 7"NS & 4"SS-OK SHP-JG 5-1/2-74"PHDS 4.5 & 10.5"NS-OK SHP-FK 4/28-79" PHD 15" NS L9-HR R/R DR 5/4-73" PHDS 5.5" & 7" NS (TOP) & 37.5" 5-2/74"PHDS 8"NS & 18"SS-L9 GET SMPLS 5/21-73" MKS 28.5 & 32.5" NS & U/GAU AT 5/16-72" PHD 9 1/2" NS-L9 GET PHD SPL-HFI CO ; run;

Again, thanks a lot for all your help. Ed _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com
