hotline: Georgia Rare Bird Alert date: October 10, 1998 number: 770-493-8862 to report: 770-493-8862, or lambertsewell@mindspring.com coverage: Statewide compiled: October 10, 1998 transcriber: Joel Hitt internet: joel@hitt.com

This is the Georgia Rare Bird Alert for Sunday afternoon, October 10, 1998.

A winter-plumage Northern Wheatear was seen and photographed at the intersection of Macy Lane and the western end of Beachview Drive on Jekyll Island about noon today. The bird was seen by about a dozen birders working at the nearby Jekyll Island Banding Station.

The wheatear was on the lawn at 736 Macy Lane from a distance of about 40', and perched on the lamppost at that address. It was also observed perching on the power line at the intersection described above. Darrell Lee, Lydia Thompson, Jan Pittman, and Charles Ratliff were among the observers.

If approved by the state checklist committee of GOS (formalities, formalities), this would be the first state record for this species. The bird will be searched for again later today, and we'll report back to you on that as soon as possible thereafter.

This concludes this edition of the Georgia Rare Bird Alert. If you wish any information about GOS, email inquiries are accepted at gos@hom.net. If you wish to join GOS, send a check for $16 to GOS, PO Box 1684, Cartersville GA 30120.
