I missed the original post on this one. I would say the answer depends on the environment you are in. One key question is whether you want SAS to run in the memory and CPU of the client or server machine. The setup for installing SAS on what effectively becomes a file server is not so difficult. Basically, you run through the standard setup from a client machine (installing SAS to run off a network drive) and then just need to setup short-cuts on your client machines that point to appropriate SAS.EXE and CONFIG.SAS files. SAS has some very nice deals (at least for academic customers) for such a setup. The costs and complexity of setting up a UNIX or NT box to actually *RUN* SAS (as opposed to just serving the files) were much greater the last time I inquired.
