OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

Predictive modelling is a major concern in theoretical ecology. Relationships between variables in natural systems are frequently non-linear and conventional modelling tools could appear to be inappropriate to capture complexity of such systems. Artificial Neural Networks, based on the non-linear principle, are now known as powerful methods for empirical data analysis (identification, control, prediction, etc.) and classification problems. However, few applications have been published in theoretical and applied ecology, in contrast to the physical, chemical or medicine sciences.

This workshop will be of interest for all ecologists, actual and potential users of Artificial Neural Networks methods in all fields of ecology. This meeting should initiate discussions and future collaborations between researchers involved in theoretical, applied and evolutionary ecology.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME

The conference theme is ‘Applications of Artificial Neural Networks to Ecological Modelling’. The conference will enlighten all areas where aquatic and terrestrial environments meet. Most of the programme will be determined by what members offer in papers and posters.

The Committee attempts to have some keynotes and invited lectures which will facilitate both breadth and depth treatment of information, and we encourage specialist papers in multidisciplinary aspects of life sciences. The Committee welcomes other proposals for possible theme sessions and round-tables.

Proposal theme sessions

* Ecological Modelling. The State of the Art * Pattern Recognition * Pattern Classification * Clustering and Classification * Diagnosis and Monitoring * Prediction and Control * Signal Processing * Temporal and Spatial Sequences * Others

PUBLICATION

Original papers will be published on merit in a special hard volume of the Springer Verlag Environmental Science Serie (12 to 15 contributions). Other papers (15-20) will form a special issue of Ecological Modelling, an international ecological journal which accepts to publish some papers (C.I. 1995 equals 0.85 ISI source). All contributions will be reviewed by at least two different referees chosen by the Committee for their general expertise and competency in the field before acceptance (or refusal) for publication. The Proceedings with abstracts and list of participants will be available during the Workshop, and we will try to mail these Proceedings to all participants several weeks before the beginning of the meeting.

LANGUAGE

French and English will be the two official languages during the Conference, but abstracts, posters and published papers will be exclusively written in English.

CALENDAR OF EVENMENT

· December 15th 1997 : Preliminary registrations and Submission of abstracts for poster or oral presentation (1 page). All abstracts will be reviewed before accepted for the symposium. The submission of abstract could be send by E-mail (by attach document, RTF Format) to : lek@cict.fr. · March 15th 1998 : Notification of acceptance of contributions. · June 15th 1998 : Submission of full manuscript to be considered for publication. · October 15th 1998 : Notification of acceptance (publication in hard volume or special issue) or correction of manuscript. · December 1998 : Final version to be proposed for publication.

THE MEETING PLACE

Toulouse is fourth largest city of France and is the European Space capital. It is situated on the Garonne River in very lush surroundings. Toulouse of today is a lively university town (with more than 100,000 students) and has a rich medieval history.

The city is easily accessible by air (through Blagnac Airport at 10Km from University) with a number of regular direct and indirect (stopover in Paris or other European capitals) international flights, rail, or bus.

EXCURSION

After the conference a number of one-day and two-day optional excursions are planed. These will be offer the possibility to see the AirBus assembly line, the Space City Museum of Toulouse (new in 1997), and the Medieval city of Carcassone (80Km from Toulouse). More information will be provided in the second announcement.

REGISTRATION FEES

Registration fees are about 1,500 FRF per person (US $300, £ 200). More details will be given in 2nd circular. Provisional Date of Second Circular Mailing around September 15th.
