The Consumer Price Index is the most widely publicized inflation measure in the US, and is the one most often used as the basis of cost-of-living adjustments. It is a product of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (in the Dept. of Labor). See

Economy-wide measures of price change (inflation) are also developed as part of the Gross Domestic Product accounting process. This is done by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (in the Dept. of Commerce), though it makes extensive use of data collected by the BLS (that is, it is not a totally separate exercise). See
