Pat, the programs that read the directory information are already written and available! They can be found in either:

SAS Companion For the MVS Environment, Second Edition pages: 243 - 244

... or:

SAS Companion For the MVS Environment, First Edition page: 404

Both of the above cited references contain a section titled "Example of Producing Directory Records". Just plug-n-play!
