APRIL MEETING AGENDA

DATE -- Wednesday, April 23, 1997 TIME -- 3:00-5:00 pm PLACE --Friday Center Seminar Room University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, NC

The April meeting will be held in the seminar room of the Friday Center at the UNC-Chapel Hill. The Friday Center is on NC Highway 54 near the UNC campus; a map is at the end of this newsletter.

3:00 - 3:15 Welcome and RTSUG Business (Gerri Furlow, outgoing president) Installation of new RTSUG officers

3:30 - 5:00 Don Henderson from SAS Institute will demonstrate some of the new tools for running the SAS System on the Web. This was _the_ hot topic at SUGI 22; Don's presentation attracted so much interest that it had to be moved to a larger room, and many people were still turned away.

As Don showed at the conference, the SAS/IntrNet Application Dispatcher allows you to submit requests to a SAS Application program from a web page and then view the results from a web browser. In this demonstration, Don will show how the different parts of SAS/IntrNet work to make this possible. Don also said he will be showing off a new Java tool which he did not demonstrate at SUGI. This is one presentation you won't want to miss, so mark your calendars!

RECAP OF NOVEMBER MEETING

The last meeting was held November 21, 1996, at SAS Institute. Our sincere thanks to Maura Stokes, a senior statistical software developer at SAS Institute, for her excellent demonstration of a new interface for SAS statistics.

MEET THE NEW OFFICERS

KEITH BROWN (President)

Keith Brown received his B.A. from the University of Alabama in 1981, and his M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1983, both in Political Science. He began using SAS as a student in 1982, and progressed to teaching it as an instructor and user service consultant at UNC-CH. In 1994, he moved "down the hill" to UNC-General Administration, which oversees all sixteen campuses of the UNC system. Currently, Keith is a programmer and data analyst in the Division of Program Assessment and Public Service, where he primarily uses BASE SAS, SAS/GRAPH, and SAS/STAT on several platforms, including IBM MVS, UNIX, and Macintosh.

CAROLE BEAM (Co-Secretary)

As the NCSU Hardwood Research Cooperative's Research Technician, I have been SUGging away with SAS extensively for the last three years in data analyses, report writing, and creating measurement forms. My primary duties include management, summarization, and analysis of data for about 300 active studies, as well as coordination of trial installations, measurements, and sampling. More specifically, I am responsible for storing and retrieving raw data from both mainframe and personal computers; verifying data completeness, quality, and validity; analyzing data using various statistical techniques; preparing charts, tables, graphical displays, and summaries of statistical analyses; and, provide interpretation of results.

Prior to my work at NCSU, I used SAS for 8 years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA. I researched, analyzed, computed, statistically processed, and evaluated economic and financial data for staff economists and for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, in Washington, DC. I used SAS as a Research Assistant and all along the way up to my last position as Statistical Project Manager. (Hmmm, perhaps I should run a PROC REG. Do you think there is a correlation?)

I have a BS degree in Business Administration, economics major, from Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, PA, and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Management Information Systems major, from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA.

SARAH LEIN (Co-Secretary)

"I began using SAS (BASE and STAT) during my Masters program in Soils at NCSU, 1985-87. Upon graduation, I worked in social science research for 3 years, again using BASE and STAT. After a 4-year hiatus, I returned to using SAS in 1994, when I began (present) job as Data Manager/Analyst for a forest research group at NCSU where we are currently shifting all data and SAS programs from the MVS to PC environment. Attended my first SESUG meeting in 1996 (Atlanta), and hope to put to use some the many things I learned....whenever there is a lull in the workload....!"

JOY SMITH (Treasurer)

Joy Smith has 7 years experience as an Applications Analyst Programming Consultant (AKA SAS Consultant) in the Department of Statistics at NCSU. She has been co-treasurer of RTSUG since January 1993.
