Jay, I don't know if the following counts as reasonably convenient, but I once did something similar in which I made extensive use of annotate datasets, where I could draw lines of a specified thickness. It pretty much amounted to drawing my own graphs through annontate; involved an awful lot of macro variables, but the graphs looked really great in the end. just my $.02.
