Subject: UPDATE character var to missing i.e. blank?
I need to update a character variable to blanks in a master file using
the UPDATE statement in a DATA step.
The manuals aren't to clear about this particular case. No examples to
be found :-(
I tried to set the character variable in the transaction file with the
flag = ._ ; /* flag is an existing character variable! */
This elicits a note about changing numeric values to character. And in
the subsequent data step with the UPDATE statement it doesn't update
the value in the master data set to missing.
I also tried
flag = '_' ;
in the transaction file. It doesn't cause any notes as in the earlier
run, but it doesn't work either.
Updating numerical values works fine when the transaction file is made
with a data step containing the first type of assignment.
Any suggestions as to where to look or how to do it?
