Back in the olden days of computing text editors used to reserve columns
73-80 of a card for sequence numbers. The NUMBERED set command allowed SPSS
to read only columns 1 thru 72 of an input card image. The use of the
UNNUMBERED set command told SPSS to read all 80 columns. This sort of thing
was convenient back then, but in a era of GUI's and Pivot Tables it became
unnecessary and was made obsolete.
Anyway, I always found it easier to draw a diagonal line across my box of
cards anyway :-)
