| Subject: | Looking for the Clay-Colored at Cochran Shoals |
|---|
Late yesterday and again today, I made a quick stop by Cochran Shoals
sparrow field to look for the Clay-colored Sparrow reported by Jim Healy
yesterday. While I struck out both times, I did see a sparrow today right
before it disappeared into the grasses that had a dominant white central
crown stripe surrounded by brown streaks. That's about all I got on it
before it disappeared into the grasses. I had been looking in that general
direction because I was hearing sweet and high pitched chip notes that
sound similar to the CCSP. The sparrow field has quite a bit of standing
water in it so I made a wide swing around the pool of water (doing my best
not to trample the habitat). It didn't have the giss of a Swamp or a Song,
so I was intrigued and decided to approach it and, when I got a foot or so
near it, it flushed and flew out of range, behind some trees and somewhere
in the taller grasses. As it flew I noticed heavy contrast in colors across
the wings (black, brown and a touch of white) but that's about it. I was
expecting it to land in a nearby tree but this bird kept flying, low and
out of view. Since I was on my lunch break, I couldn't stay but remain
hopeful that a CCSP is still there.
Other interesting birds in or near the field included PRAIRIE WARBLER,
SEDGE WREN, and BARRED OWL, wanting to know who cooks for me. (Sometimes I
wonder the same.)
