Subject: 3rd Party Transport Files

Does anyone have experience with SAS version 5 transport files created by third party utilities that have character variables longer than 200 characters?

Someone sent us data this way with character variables longer than 200. SAS seemed to be able to read it, but I do not know of anyway to get SAS to write a SAS version 5 transport file with long variables.

I am wondering if I can trust this format? Am I risking loosing data if I let them continue to use this format?
