Hi, folks, Charlie has graciously provided photos of the Northern Saw-whet Owl that he banded last night:

Hi folks,

This year I opened my saw-whet owl nets 2 weeks early because the folks in Alabama caught one back then (they are now up to 5 at 2 locations).

I've caught 4 Eastern Screech-owls, 2 rabbits and an armadillo. The folks up in New England can't claim that.

Tonight, at 10pm, I finally caught the target species, a 2nd year female Northern Saw-whet Owl.

To tell you more about the size, here are some comparisons:

Eastern Screech 1 wing 151 mm, mass 128 grams Eastern Screech 2 wing 163 mm, mass 148 grams Eastern Screech 3 wing 155 mm, mass 163 grams Northern Saw Whet wing 141 mm mass 93 grams

That makes 7 Saw-whets captured in 5 seasons, 2 of which were same-season recaptures (Ontario and Virginia).

My nets are now closed, as I'm banding tomorrow at Joe Kurz.

Cheers, Charlie Muise Lamar County
