Subject:   Coralliophilia Species
Content-Type:   multipart/alternative;

Anybody care to venture a guess at identifying a shell? I just acquired an unidentified shell from C&S Shell Cabinet Auction.. The data states:

Cf Coralliophila species 21.9mm, Gem, W/O, RARE, new species? Philippines. Palawan. Coron Island. From hookah divers. July, 2011. In Kosuge & Suzuki's work Illustrated Catalogue of Latiaxis and It's Related Groups-Family Coralliophilidae of 1985, there is a picture of Babelomurex asper (A.Adams, 1855) plate 47 #7, a holotype photo, which certainly resembles the questionable shell, however they give Gulf of California for a location. Funny thing is, Myra Keen mentions this shell in her work Sea Shells of Tropical West America using the same holotype photo as did Kosuge & Suzuki. She states Sea of Cortez, but add no recent (at time of her work) species had been recorded. She further states that the specimen may well not be Western American at all. I can find no other information regarding this species. Roland Houart looked at a picture of my shell, compared it to the holotype photo provided by Kosuge & Suzuki and in his opinion, the holotype picture and my picture are probably conspecific, however states he is not all that familiar with the Coralliophilidae, or perhaps more correctly now Coralliophilinae, a subfamily of Muricidae. Does anyone have any other information regarding Babelomurex asper (A.Adams, 1855) . Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will be happy to send a photo of my shell to anyone wishing to take a stab at identifying it. Thanks for any possible help, Martin
