Having four cores running on a workstation are probably sufficient for 99% of all people right now. With four cores on my desktop, I have to TRY to peg all the cores. I/O is more of an issue for me than CPU at this point.

Things are changing though, and fast. You see Apple with their new 12 core 24 LCPU Mac Pro out there. http://store.apple.com/us/configure/Z0M4?mco=MTg2OTQ5OTk

Of course, you could probably just go with this baby from Dell...

Kevin,

I'll have to let our more hardware literate members discuss the differences between processors on power workstations and servers, but I know that today's power workstations can run rings around my current 4- processor server, and at a fraction of the cost of upgrading the server.

Also, I poorly stated the licensing difference. What I am planning on switching to is a 15-user workstation license. That would allow 15 of us to install SAS on as many computers as we so desire, as long as only the 15 of us will be running SAS on those computers.

Thus, when any of us go on a trip, we'll be able to access SAS directly on our laptops. At home, or at work, any of us will be able to access SAS on either our desktops or laptops.

And, however defined, I believe the license allows us to have up to 4- processor machines. However, I'll leave the definition of processor to someone else more knowledgeable of such matters.

Also, one only needs to access the server, versus sitting at one's workstation. Finding myself once again in locations across Atlanta, home to some of the worst traffic and public transportation system, I would value the ability to use SAS without my laptop instead of snaking back to my cubicle once I met with an investigator. > >-Kevin > > > >Kevin Viel, PhD >Senior Research Statistician >Patient Safety & Quality >International College of Robotic Surgery >Saint Joseph's Translational Research Institute > >Saint Joseph's Hospital >5671 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, NE, Suite 330 >Atlanta, GA 30342 > >(678) 843-6076: Direct Phone >(678) 843-6153: Facsimile >(404) 558-1364: Mobile >kviel@sjha.org >Confidentiality Notice: >This e-mail, including any attachments is the >property of Catholic Health East and is intended >for the sole use of the intended recipient(s). >It may contain information that is privileged and >confidential.
