Adding one more June report of White Pelicans in the state: my wife and I
observed two White Pelicans on Long Pond in southern Lowndes County around
7:30 this morning (13 miles south of Valdosta, 5 miles north of the GA/FL
state line, near Highway 41 and the town of Lake Park). We saw them cruise
back and forth for about 30 minutes, and I got the photos posted in the
folder at the link above. Photos aren't very dramatic, since they basically
just moved around in an circular pattern about 100 yards in diameter. We
didn't see them in flight. We weren't able to look for them during the day,
and as of 8:30 tonight they were not spotted again. The lake has been fairly
busy with jet ski and motor boat traffic all day, and that activity could
have forced them to move on. However, we'll look again in the morning when
the lake is quiet.
