I ran down to Lake Tobesofkee yesterday (12/31) and found two Bonaparte's
Gulls on the lake. Afterwards, I went to Dublin to try for the hummingbird
that Bob Sargent reported the other day but didn't see it. However, Mrs.
Jackson said it's coming around every day, mainly to Mrs. Rhodes feeder by
her kitchen window. She said someone took photos of it earlier in the week
and sent them off to determine the identify. While there, I saw one male
Baltimore Oriole. Mrs. Jackson said they typically have several show up
each morning - but no Bullock's (yet).
South of I-16, I watched a flock of what had to be well over 10,000 Red-
winged Blackbirds. Mixed in were starlings, cowbirds and grackles, but I
could only find 8 BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS and zero Rusty's. While watching the
spectacle, a COOPER'S HAWK swooped into the flock, stirred them up pretty
good, and caught one female RWBL in mid-air. It quickly brought it to the
road to do its business. As it was about to rip into the squirming bird, a
car came along and the Cooper's released the Red-wing and both flew off -
in opposite directions, of course. On that note, I decided it was time to
head for home.
