This morning I visited Bear Creek Reservoir to see what was around. The
lake was fairly quiet except for one large (40) raft of gulls. I
watched the raft for a half hour in the distance, but heat shimmer made
IDs difficult. I knew I saw two different sets of wings in there
(Bonaparte's and Ring-billed), but it wasn't until they flushed due to
an oncoming boat that I was able to get an accurate count. There were
at least 9 Bonaparte's Gulls in the group. This is the largest flock of
inland gulls I've seen yet in Georgia. I know some people get excited
over the little pretty warblers, but I have to admit that the gulls are
my favorite group to stare at. You just never know what you're going to
get!
Abbreviated List:
BONAPARTE'S GULL - 9
Ring-billed Gull - 31
Swamp Sparrow - 7
Song Sparrow - 6
Field Sparrow - 3
Lesser Scaup - 9
Pied-billed Grebe - 6
American Coot - 26
Northern Harrier - 1
Red-headed Woodpecker - 2
