Augusta-Aiken Audubon had a field trip to Phinizy Swamp NP this morning and
while it was windy and cool most of the rain missed us. We ended up with 54
species (I think) by the time we were done. Ducks were light, just one real
flock in the equalization pond (Ring-necked, Shoveler, Blue-winged Teal) but
we had a good warbler and raptor day. We also had 30 Rusty Blackbirds. The
flood plain is flooded but they were in the trees in some of the higher
areas.
We had 4 Black and White Warblers and a Yellow-throated Warbler which was
really nice. There were a LOT of Ruby-crowned Kinglets around and we also
had 3 or 4 Golden-crowned Kinglets and a couple of Blue-headed Vireos.
On the raptor front we had our first Northern Harrier of the season as well
as two Osprey flying around and 'talking' to each other, a Cooper's Hawk and
a second year Bald Eagle.
All in all it was a great day to be out and about.
