You have a good memory of trivia. I recall the Texas shooting but given that the shooter died in 1966 at a younger age than the man whom I met, I think we can rule out a match. Mind you, the name could also have been Whitmoore or something similar. My San Antonio proceedings is packed away at the moment so I cannot check the list of attendees.

That would be spooky if the guy's name really was Charley Whitman and he was in Texas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Whitman S

I'm not sure where it fits in this discussion but there was an early copy of SAS that a guy named Charley Whitman (sp?) ported to an IBM operating system that SAS was not supporting. We did not have it at our shop and I cannot recall the name. This was around the late 1970s. I'm not sure whether a lawsuit was ever involved and apparently he went to work for SAS. I recall meeting him at one of the early Texas SUGIs -- probably San Antonio.

I remembered a big bruhaha but was racking my brain to come up with a name.

Could INDAS be the outfit based in Nashville (as I recall) which had a port to VAX/VMS ?; They were sued by SI for misappropriating actual code (i.e. stealing code); as I recall they lost.

As long as we're discussing SAS clones, do not forget Henry Feldman and Conceptual Software, creators of DBMS/COPY. AFAIK, they were never sued by SAS; instead they were bought out and absorbed into the DataFlux product line. I'm not sure what happened to Henry but I suppose he wanted to devote more time to acting. (I still run DBMS/COPY once in a while.)
