Thanks David! I thought I had recently checked the PR0W! Still learning the rules!

I thought I might point out to you that Prothonotary is actually PROW. When there are 2 or more that would share a common code, neither of them get the mutual code unless one of them is a one word name (e.g. Buller's Shearwater = BULS whereas Bushtit = BUSH). Barred Owl and Barn Owl would share a common bode, but instead of one of them being BAOW, Barred Owl = BDOW and Barn Owl = BNOW.

Good Birding!

I use these codes so that I can learn them. It is a fun way to broaden my knowledge, keep shorthand notes, and communicate with other birders. It also makes a nice game to play while driving. Learning the correct full common name is crucial to using these codes. Have fun! http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbl/manual/sname.htm

P.S. Marion Dobbs graciously reminded me to use the full common name in the first reference to a bird when posting. I had jammed a bunch of codes in the subject line when I was posting several sites and a variety of genus.
