Subject: Northwest Georgia Hawkwatch 10/17/09

Hi All,

I am suddenly organizing a northwest Georgia hawkwatch with a few folks so far for this Saturday. Details are not yet finalized but will be later tomorrow sometime, and depending on the weather, if work does not intervene, etc.

The main movement of Sharp-shinned Hawk migration should be around the middle of October in northwest Georgia so this Saturday is a very prime opportunity!

Hawkwatching can be very iffy because it depends on a lot of factors, even factors upstream, so we go without great expectations, but we will see at least some hawks that is for sure. The timing is good, the location(s) will be good, and I think the weather will cooperate as well.

We will probably not be following a formal hawkwatch protocol as the locations are not yet established, and we are not trained for the specific locations, but we will try to get some kind of count and do the best we can.

The location(s) will be in the northwest corner of the state, somewhere in a large loose triangle between Menlo, LaFayette, and Trenton! There is a good chance that we will start at the Hood Overlook west of LaFayette, but nothing is firmed up yet. We will probably meet onsite between 9 and 10am and stay at the first location until 12 or 2pm, or all day, we may move to another site at a random time as well depending on what we are seeing.

Bring your binoculars, and your scopes if you wish, Scope Cable-Tie Sight's will be available for free if you like and free training can be provided as well! It could be very cold and windy, be prepared for it! Bring chairs! Also, there are no facilities, or restaurants, etc., very close to these areas, bring all needed supplies with you! Email me offline if you would like to join up with us!

Good Birding!

Mark
