Hi, folks, a belated message from this past Sunday (9/20). I was able to
bird the Reregulation Lake near Carters Lake for about 20-30 minutes before
I packed it in when the rain started mid-morning. Among the swirling 125 or
so (mostly) Chimney Swifts and (few) Barn Swallows at the Talking Rock
Creek/GA 136 bridge were 4 female/immature Purple Martins. They were easy to
pick out due to the large size, different shape, behavior & overall darker
coloration...and because they were not so swirling and flew low overhead a
couple of times.
I knew at the time that it was a pretty good personal sighting but as it
turns out it is the latest I have ever seen the species ever anywhere. The
late date as of 2003 for GA is 25 Oct, so it wasn't even close to a record,
but the late date for the Mountain region is 16 Aug according to the
Annotated Checklist of GA Birds.
Take care,
