Many thanks to those who responded. My apologies to Ian because somehow I missed his post until today (I read SAS-L from the web). I had long ago learned from Ian's post that SAS functions that require quoted arguments do not require them with %SysFunc(). I do not have them in my soon-to-be production macro. I will have to substitute my delimiter in the %Scan(). I did like Chang's example. This list is great for teaching and making one think.

Its been an embarassing day, but I think I learned a few things.
