Subject: Bartow County Loop
Today Kathy Miller and I enjoyed a great trip to Bartow County, following
yesterday's trip to Marshallville Super Sod Farm to see the array of
migrating shorebirds including Upland, Buff-breasted, Pectoral,
Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers. At the Bartow County Loop, we had some
nice surprises including a Willet and a Sanderling.
**Brandon Farm Road**
SANDERLING - 1
WESTERN SANDPIPER - 8
LEAST SANDPIPER - 10
PECTORAL - 1
SPOTTED SANDPIPER - 2
GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS - many
WILLET (Western Sub) - 1
Note: We went back later in the afternoon and ran into Jim Urban who was
hoping to relocate the Stilt Sandpipers (with no success). This is when we
saw the Willet - and Jim got a nice photo of it. A nice surprise for me
since I don't recall seeing a Willet anywhere except near the Coast.
**Taff Road**
STILT SANDPIPER - 22+
PECTORAL SANDPIPER - 2
LEAST SANDPIPER - 7
SPOTTED SANDPIPER - 6
BANK SWALLOW - 1
**Other interesting birds in the area**
Wood Duck
Eurasian Collared Dove
Barn Swallow
Eastern Meadowlark
Blue Grosbeak
Eastern Kingbird
On our way up, we made a side trip to the Allatoona Pass Battlefield to
check it out. It's off I-75 to the east at exit 283. It's federally
protected and looks like it would be a great place to bird during passerine
migration and during winter for waterfowl. For those who are history or
civil war buffs, you're in for an extra treat if you haven't been here.
Watch your step, though. Dogs use the trails and not all the owners pick up
after them. We had a few close calls.
