Arthur Tabachneck provided me with the suggestion that enabled me to solve the problem. His suggestion provided me with the general direction to proceed. My problem was with the log or output windows, not the editor (program or enhanced.) What one has to do is go to the window of interest, log or output, then do tools->options->log/output, and then make sure that the checkbox "Confirm_window clears" is unchecked. Then, when you type "clear" in the command window, the contents of the log/output window will disappear without any prompt.
