Several walks this week should help birders usher in spring with very
experienced leaders! Hugh Garrett will be leading his second of 11
weekly Tuesday walks at Cochran Shoals at 8 AM (3/17), meeting at the
Interstate North Parkway entrance. Some great wintering birds were
found on two AAS walks there last week. Saturday walks include the
Newman Wetlands Center and E.L. Huie Land Application Center (8 AM) on
the southside of town, with Jeff Sewell and Carol Lambert-- perhaps the
last opportunity to see a lot of waterfowl before they make their way
north, as well as catch some early migrants, a few of which already
have shown up. Georgann Schmalz will be leading 8 AM walks north of
town, on Saturday (3/21) at Sawnee Mountain Preserve in Cumming (which
has a beautiful new visitor's center/museum and some great mountain
trails) and and on Sunday (3/22) at Dawson Forest, with its diverse
habitat of fields, forests and wetland. Beginners are welcome at all
these walks. For directions and more information, including an
additional local Sunday walk and the full March schedule, please see
the Atlanta Audubon website (atlantaaudubon.org).
