One further dining suggestion for those who do not know the east and have smaller budgets: There is a small chain called "Legal Seafood" that operates roughly from Washington north to some point in New England. I have never been disappointed and they have some of their own dishes that are very good. For one item, the have a smoked bluefish pate that is quite good -- to the point that we have fixed it at home.

There is a location in Crystal City which is in Alexandria and near the Metro.

hi ... since this thread has turned into a bit of a catch all ... DC food (have tried and enjoyed all three) ...

restaurants opened by two wonderful DC chefs

Michel Richard yes, there's an $18 cheeseburger with bacon (name 'cheeseburger' does NOT do it justice), but 2008 James Beard award for Best New Restaurant (plus the desserts are great, as is the space --- open kitchen is 'entertainment')... http://www.centralmichelrichard.com/

José Andrés great Mexican food, and one of 2007 Esquire Best New Restaurants (however, noise level of riding on the wing of an Airbus) http://www.oyamel.com/

above two need reservations

and (reservations for 6+ Sun-Thu, no reservations --- stand in line on Fri-Sat) ... bit more laid back

'superb' mini-burger appetizers (3, 6, or 9), wood-fired pizza, and BEST of all is Chimay on draft http://www.matchboxdc.com/
