Does anybody have any experience running SAS as a service?

I have an existing application that is running in about .6 seconds and
the SAS step is 50% of the total elapsed time.  Unfortunately, a good
chunk of this is starting and stopping SAS.

I'm hoping that there is some functionality in BASE SAS that will
allow me to run it as a service and avoid this overhead each time.
