SUBJECT: New FMLA regulations and poster
Effective Friday, January 16, please print and post in your work area
the new, revised poster relating to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
New FMLA regulations include leave entitlements for family members of
individuals injured while on active military duty and employees who are
called to active duty or whose family members are called to active duty.
Generally, two provisions have been added:
1. FMLA-eligible employees who are family members of service personnel
are eligible to take up to 26 weeks of leave in a single 12-month period
to care for a service member with a serious illness or injury incurred
in the line of duty while on active duty. This 26-week entitlement
extends FMLA job protection beyond the normal 12 weeks of FMLA leave.
2. In addition to the four qualifying events for FMLA, a new event has
been added to the list for individuals in the National Guard or Reserves
who are called to active duty. For the spouse or the service member,
most absences related to preparation for active duty (making child care,
housing, or financial arrangements, etc.) qualify for FMLA leave under
this new provision.
Details for both military regulations can be found on the new poster.
Any questions related to these new provisions may be directed to UGA
Faculty and Staff Relations at 706-542-9231 or 706-542-2167.
