Went to Lake Acworth to look for Chuck's ducks & others. Only found one
American Coot with an assortment of mutt-ducks, and a couple of gulls flying in
the distance. Always one belted kingfisher calling as it flies. Over on the
flats there were a few ... rock doves.
But while walking & talking near the gazebo area I thought for a
split-second I heard Sandhill Cranes. Then again. Finally said something and we both
heard them! Distant. Then closer and louder. But we couldn't spot them in
all that open sky. Finally, swirling from behind trees to the northwest, the
first of 3 waves of what turned out to be a good 350 cranes ... low at first,
then picking up speed and elevation to disappear between two thick layers of
clouds forming far across the lake. Wow. 2:30-2:50pm
