The Floyd County CBC was a great success yesterday. Light rain for most of the early morning gave way to calm, overcast skies and great birding in the afternoon. We finished the day at 101 species (a new count record!!!), with several great sightings to share at our countdown. Kudos to all those that participated. The rich diversity of waterfowl was perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of the count. Highlights for the day included:

Double-crested Cormorant

Red-breasted Merganser

Canvasback

Redhead

Hooded Merganser

20 Northern Pintail

Bufflehead

Horned Grebe

Red-breasted Nuthatch

Loggerhead Shrike

>100 Pine Siskins

Lincoln's Sparrow

White-crowned Sparrow

Vesper Sparrow

Brewer's Blackbird

We also had a red-tailed hawk with a very impressive set of fluffy white pants and an abnormally dark breast band. Initially, we thought Rough-legged Hawk but in the end agreed to call it an especially rough-legged red tail. However, the bird's appearance was not the real reason for our scrutiny. This bird was initially spotted running around like a shorebird at the edge of a pasture puddle. We discovered that it was plucking worms and slurping them down. It kept up its vermivorous habits for over 3 hours despite a crowd of birders and curious onlookers.

Worm Regards,

Owen Kinney

Rome, Floyd County
