The answer to your second question is that the protection against Type I error comes from the significance test for the initial MANOVA. You would only run individual ANOVA for each IV if the initial MANOVA is significant.

Hi, Can anyone shed some light on SPSS Manova results? What are the main elements to be looked at along with significance of F statistic?

Also, why would one run individual ANOVA for each independent variable as a follow up analysis? Isn't the objective of MANOVA to reduce type I error?
