I see a Eurow.d informat but not one for sterling. How about

Input @;
_infile_ = compress( _infile_ , '??'x )  ;
input ....


where the '??'x would be the hex for a pounds sign. Or, since you keyboard
seems to support it, you might be able to type the sterling symbol in
single quotes.
