Subject: converting ssd files

We received a bunch of SAS ssd data sets from our state department of health. We don't own the software to open up the ssd files. I've heard of DBMS Copy as a legitimate way of converting the files into something we can read - Excel, MS SQL and Access. I am wondering if there are other alternatives w/o purchasing SAS itself to either link to the data sets through OLEDB/ODBC or convert the files? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
