You may be old enough to have potentially seen these (by the way, they
still are in use) but you have been spared having to read files stored by
COBAL and the like. I, fortunately, have had little need to read them so I
will not offer specific informats.
Take a look at Base Dictionary odf Language Elements section of the on line
docs and look up Working With Packed Decimal and Zoned Decimal Data.
I'm just playing for a mintue this afternoon. What are you doing working
with this stuff on a Sat.?

I have a text file that has two fields which appear as follows:
00000793+ S1341
00000034- S32 G82 S42
00000800+ S1341
00000215- S72 S33 S80 S1
00000235+ S022 S36781
00000432+ S022 S36781
The first is identified as having a picture of x(9), while the second has
a picture of s9(9).
I'm either too young to know what those mean, or so old that I've
forgotten.
