You can use any text editor to edit SAS code. Using the batch mode is
a great option, although it is basically opening up another instance
of SAS (but does not utilize the user settings). I have used
Microsoft Word at times to edit SAS code, with no problems (just make
sure you save with the correct extention if you save from Word).
You may want to make sure your SAS kernel has stopped before trying to
cut and paste. Some PROCs in SAS keep the SAS engine running, even
after the output is done. You may need to put a QUIT; statement in to
assist in some of these.
