I've used the SAS email engine to send SMS messages via the carrier's email to SMS gateway, so I know it's possible.

Getting the correct format for the address is key. Can you send email to your phone using your regular email program? If not, then you will need to investigate why that is failing. Perhaps you don't have the correct carrier for the recipient.
