AOU abbreviations are useful and efficient in communicating with those who know them. As Mike points out, many subscribers to GABO do not. This is one good reason to limit their use in posts to the list. Another is mentioned in the GABO guidelines, which everyone receives when they subscribe and which are available at any time by following the appropriate link found at the bottom of each posted message.

"Keeping in mind that all messages posted to the list are archived and that a second fundamental goal of GABO is the building of a useful searchable database of Georgia-related bird information, the FULL NAME of a reported bird should be used, at least in the first reference to that bird within a message. Abbreviations and non-standard names should be avoided, they are of little use in a database search. Please include the exact location and date of any sightings as well as the names of any observers."

I agree with David Brown that "AOU abbreviations are a perfectly acceptable means of referencing species", but the members of GOS and the GABO-L span a wide range of birding experiences, and some of us, at this point may not even be aware of the list of AOU abbreviations. It is for myself, easier, more enjoyable reading, if the accepted common name of the bird is written out instead of the abbreviation.

Perhaps the listserve administrators have some guidelines on this topic which would be useful for all of us.

I guess I could look it up on the AOU checklist...but I have absolutely no idea what reference is being made by IMHO; however, I am one of the lesser experienced of the GOS members.

A good day to all,
