To GABO:
Friday, 26 Oct 2007 was overcast with misting rain in Glynn County, but
I went to
South Beach, Jekyll Island and found a first winter Franklin's Gull
among a flock of
at least 1000 gulls. Fortunately, the Franklin's was standing away from
the flock
and was easy to spot. This bird may be the same one reported a couple of
weeks
ago and photographed by Earl Horn.
Bob Zaremba called to tell me about Marjorie Clark's White-winged
Dove at 4 Porter Lane, Jekyll Island, GA., as I was leaving the beach.
I was able to find it ten minutes later sitting on her fence in front of
her home.
Today, Saturday, I walked the dikes at Altamaha WMA and found two
Clay-colored
Sparrows, one on each side of the observation tower on the east side of
GA Hwy 17,
McIntosh Co. Also present were a pair of Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks
with 7 first winter
birds, obviously their brood still with the parents. This year marks the
first fully documented
breeding for the species for Georgia at the Altamaha WMA, McIntosh
County, although in the
summer of 2006, an adult with ducklings was reliably reported from
Brooks County near the
Florida line. I am not sure whether a report was ever officially made to
establish that record.
I also had what appeared to be an albinistic Royal Tern: solid white,
black legs, yellow bill,
and blond crest- now called Howard's Tern by some (me).
