Yesterday am / early afternoon visited:
1) Carters Lake Powerhouse field
2) Hidden Pond Trail from near the Reregulation dam at Carters Lake
3) Coosawatee WMA along Coniston Rd from Hwy 76/411/61 and then along
unnamed gravel rds to near the E end of Cagle Rd (I'll refer to the whole
section as "Coniston Rd").
4) A few hundred yards of a gated forest track that runs S of Cagle Rd just
W of where the check station for the WMA is located on the N side of Cagle
Rd ("Cagle Rd").
5) brief stop where the Rd marked as Pocket Rd NW on Delorme crosses the
ridge of Horn Mtn (Floyd / Walker Co line)
6) The Pocket Rec Area off Pocket Rd close to Walker / Floyd Co line;
entrance rd and nature trail
7) Brief walk round the ponds at Arrowhead WMA
Had a few migrants as well as various breeders on territory.
15 spp of Warblers (in order of appearance):
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (Powerhouse field; Hidden Pond Trail; Coniston Rd;
Arrowhead)
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT (many at Powerhouse field; Coniston Rd; Cagle Rd;
Arrowhead)
BLACKPOLL WARBLER (one heard singing on edge of Powerho. field)
YELLOW WARBLER (one singing on edge of Powerho. field)
PRAIRIE WARBLER (one singing at turning for Powerho. off old US 411;
numerous Coniston and Cagle Rds; a few heard at the Pocket nature trail)
BLUE-WINGED WARBLER - 2 singing, Cagle Rd
PINE WARBLER - Cagle Rd; Arrowhead
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER - a couple singing at Horn Mtn; another head at
Pocket nature trail
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER - Pocket entrance Rd
HOODED WARBLER - a couple singing on Pocket nature trail
KENTUCKY WARBLER - 2m+f, one singing, on Pocket nature trail
MAGNOLIA WABLER - m+f, Pocket nature trail
AMERICAN REDSTART - 1f, Pocket nature trail
CANADA WARBLER - 1m, Pocket nature trail
LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH - 1, Pocket nature trail
Other things of interest:
GREEN HERON - several, Arrowhead
GREAT EGRET - 1, Arrowhead
HOODED MERGANSER - 6 half-grown young at Arrowhead (1st pond with
sufficient water for Mergs; also an Alligator in this pond as I think others
have previously reported)
WOOD DUCK - Arrowhead
WILD TURKEY - Coniston Rd
AMERICAN KESTREL - Powerho. field
FISH CROW - Powerho. field
BLUE-HEADED VIREO - 1 singing along Coniston Rd
EASTERN PEWEE - Hidden pond trail
VEERY - 1 near Parking lot for Hidden pond trail
ORCHARD ORIOLE - masses at Powerhouse field; a few at Arrowhead
FIELD SPARROW - heard singing at turning for Powerho. off old US 411,
Coniston Rd, and Arrowhead
Also saw a nice range of odonata at Arrowhead:
Ebony Jewelwing, Spreadwing sp., 'Violet' Variable Dancer, Comet Darner (f),
Lancet Clubtail (I think), Arrowhead Spiketail (approrpriately enough),
Calico Pennant, Eastern Pondhawk, Widow Skimmer, Painted Skimmer, Black
Saddlebags
