Subject: [Fwd: Jekyll Alert 2/Group 6]
Steve,
All the efforts to save Jekyll Island are having some effect. I just got
a call from the Capitol. Sen. Jeff Chapman, the author of the amendment
to save the south end and provide that Jekyll can never be sold to
developers, need all of us to contact our senators right away by e-mail.
The message is very simple."Please support the amendments of Senator
Jeff Chapman to save the south end of Jekyll Island from development and
prevent the sale of Jekyll Island in the future."
Thanks,
Pierre
ALERT #2!
At this very moment, Senator Jeff Chapman is working at the Capitol with various organizations and individuals, including two of our group’s coordinators—Dory Ingram and Babs McDonald—in trying to win support among his fellow senators for amending HB 214. As stated in our initial ‘alert’ sent out this past weekend, Senator Chapman’s amendments stipulate that Jekyll Island can never be sold; that there will be no increase in the number of permanent residential properties on Jekyll Island; and that the properties already developed on the south end of the island may be improved by the current lessees, but they may only be used for the purposes to which they are currently assigned, or revert to their natural state.
Senator Chapman has asked us to try to remobilize our supporters today or tomorrow to write specifically on behalf of his proposed amendments. So, please, if you can find the time, send your own senator, and others as well, a brief message indicating that the Chapman amendments to HB 214—which we have just learned have been co-signed by Senator Bill Cowsert (District 46, Athens )—are essential for the protection of Jekyll Island from further residential and commercial development.
Again, you should emphasize that you are speaking not only for yourself but also in the name of the 3,000+ people who, through the Initiative to Protect Jekyll Island ’s ongoing survey, have spoken loudly and clearly that what Jekyll Island needs is refurbishment, polishing, not more development.
For your convenience, you will find below a directory containing the email addresses and office phone numbers for each senator - just place your cursor on a senator’s name (not his/her email address) and hit “Control” and then click your mouse at the same time. This will take you to the senator’s contact information page, at the bottom (right) of which can be found his email address.
As we previously stated, the best way to ensure that your message reaches a given senator is to take a minute or two to call his/her office number as listed in the directory below and ask for the administrative assistant. Introduce yourself to the assistant, and ask that he/she please print off your e-mail and see that it gets to the senator's desk. Tell the assistant your name again, what time you sent the e-mail, and what you have put in the subject line.
Again, be sure to email a copy of your letter(s) to degan@igc.org - all letters will be collected into a single file and posted on our web site -- www.savejekyllisland.org -- as a subheading beneath the sidebar item “Political Action Campaign.” For privacy’s sake, e-mail and home addresses will be deleted from all postings.
Thank you once more for coming forward to speak out against HB 214 and for Senator Chapman’s amendments as a means of preserving and protecting Jekyll Island .
David and Mindy Egan
Initiative to Protect Jekyll Island
P.S. If you have an extra minute a brief note of thanks to Senator Cowsert would be a nice touch!
