I agree with you that ODS region is much simple and easy to use. But it only works for PDF destination (or Postscrips?). It won't work (?) for RTF. Many times, we need to create a graph in a format that can be easily copy/paste to MS WORD, which means we have to use emf or cgm etc. Once you get the PDF file, the only way I know of to get the graph in word, is to do screen shot, get a bitmap image then paste to word, which usually means the mess up of original font etc.
