How would that be better than sub setting the data at the time it is summarized?

Folks on SAS-L are often asking how to break up larger data sets into many smaller data sets and are almost always advised to keep the data together.

Can you demonstrate your suggested technique with an example?

I just don't see the advantage. Perhaps I am just having a senior moment.
