hotline: Georgia Rare Bird Alert date: October 28, 2006, 8:43 pm number: 770-493-8862 to report: 770-493-8862 or lambertsewell AT mindspring.com coverage: Statewide compiled: October 28, 2006 compiler: Jeff Sewell transcriber: Larry Russell

The following is a summary of the Georgia Rare Bird Alert (RBA) Saturday evening telephone report, October 28, 2006. The RBA is a service of the Georgia Ornithological Society. Jeff Sewell is the voice of the RBA.

=Correction=: It was Lisa Hurt who reported the Common Redpoll at Friendship Forest on October 23, not Lisa Clark. This was a transcriber error, and the transcriber takes full responsibility for the error. The corrected report follows: Lisa Hurt reports a COMMON REDPOLL, and a possible HENSLOW'S SPARROW from Friendship Forest in Clarkston in Dekalb Co. This may be a great spot for folks in the Atlanta area to check out. Directions: From the I-285/Lawrenceville Hwy. intersection, go east towards Tucker. In about 50 yds., turn right on Montreal Rd. At the dead end, turn right on East Ponce de Leon. Go a short distance and look for the sign for Friendship Forest. Turn into the park and park in the parking lot. Walk downhill from the parking lot. The Common Redpoll was seen in the treeline at the creek near the marshy area in front of you. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0610&L=gabo-l&O=A&P=25183

It's been a pretty good weekend in the state.

The COMMON EIDER first reported by a birder from the UK on Oct 17th and forwarded to GABO by Bill Lotz on the East River in Brunswick in Glynn Co. continues as of Oct 27th. This could be the same bird that was seen by a couple of birders on Tybee Island on October 14. Directions: Go west on Gloucester Street (GA 25) past where it crosses Bay St./Golden Isles Parkway (US 341). Park and walk to the river, you'll be facing the docks and across toward Andrews Island. The bird has been seen in the river straight out from this vantage point, as well as under the docks. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0610&L=gabo-l&O=A&P=27852 http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0610&L=gabo-l&O=A&P=28304

The PACIFIC LOON first reported by Terry Johnson and forwarded by Tim Keyes on Thursday at Plant Scherer on Lake Juliette in Monroe Co. continues to be seen. Unfortunately, Plant Scherer is unaccessable to most birders unless you are on a GA DNR guided trip. If you would like to to see this bird on a guided trip, call the GA Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR) at 478-994-1438, or the Atlanta DNR, which can be found in the phone book. There are some field trips going there from Macon Audubon and Atlanta Audubon in November. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0610&L=gabo-l&O=A&P=26853 http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0610&L=gabo-l&O=A&P=27184

Bob and Deb Zaremba report a male SHINY COWBIRD at the Altamaha Waterfowl Management Area on the east side of US17 near the observation tower. They also report 1, maybe 3 CAVE SWALLOWs in a large flock of Tree Swallows behind the big white DNR house on the west side of US17. Look in any large flock of Trees Swallows for this species, which seems to be occurring in any large flock of Tree Swallows on the coast. They also reported an AMERICAN BITTERN there. This may be the best spot in Georgia to see this species. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0610&L=gabo-l&O=A&P=28837

A flock of 41 SANDHILL CRANES were reported by Josh Spence in north Gordon Co. on Oct 27, and 2-3 flocks in the Atlanta area as well. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0610&L=gabo-l&O=A&P=27973

Kelly Bettinger reported a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH in Athens on the campus of the University of Georgia at the Ramsey Center on Oct. 21. This is a late report for this species. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0610&L=gabo-l&O=A&P=23751

Ken and Rachel Blankenship report a HENSLOW'S SPARROW at the Cochran Shoals Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Cobb Co. on Oct. 28. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0610&L=gabo-l&O=A&P=28983

David Cree reports on Oct. 26 at Lake Kedron in Peachtree City in Fayette Co. a banded WHOOPING CRANE, a part of the Florida flock, not the migrating northern flock of Whooping Cranes. It was accompanied by a SANDHILL CRANE, probably a part of the Florida Sandhill Crane population.
