That should not be any difference, because SAS uses SYNCSORT also for PROC SORT, if you have syncsort as external sort utility. PROC SYNCSORT is a SAS/TOOLKIT prc, which uses the same code as the syncsort utility. Maybe the parameter passing is easier.
